Chemistry and Climate Justice

Our shared climate is warming due to human overuse of fossil fuels, mining and destruction of carbon sinks by deforestation and some types of agriculture. Humankind and remaining biodiversity around us are in a sixth mass extinction process. It is an EMERGENCY. Scientific evidence and agreement is more than ample and many people understand the peril for this generation and future ones. Also, commitment to equity requires us to investigate the unequal effects of climate change as we shape our response to this crisis. The hope is that we can adapt as individuals and as a society fast enough to mitigate climate change for our children.

Climate change poses an imminent threat climate change to every aspect of life in our country, from the economy, to our health, and the environment.  Here in the northwest, we have seen a direct impact on our air quality during the summer months as the fire season is increasing in length. Some schools in our region have smoke days instead of snow days due to poor air quality.  An overwhelming number of scientists agree, and signs abound, that climate change is occurring much faster than was initially predicted. We have only a few critical years before the changes become irreversible. Perhaps they already are. More than 2,000 scientists contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have made it clear that cuts of at least 50% to 70% in global greenhouse gas emissions are necessary to allow our climate to re-stabilize. Therefore, the Government and all of US should be making every effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as habitat destruction – now!

Children Sue the Government for Climate Change. Youth filed their constitutional climate lawsuit, called Juliana v. U.S., against the U.S. government in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon in 2015. Earth Guardians is also an organizational plaintiff in the case.

Forget everything you think you know about global warming. The really inconvenient truth is that it’s not about carbon—it’s about capitalism. The convenient truth is that we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.
